Hello and welcome to the Fitness DVD Guide. My name is Kate and I am the chief DVD reviewer on this blog. From time to time I have asked someone else to review a DVD (there is after all only so many I can do myself!)
Over the years, especially since having children, I have struggled to get back into shape and maintain it. With less time available to sneak off to the gym, and my joints protesting from the amount of pavement pounding I was doing during my running days, I decided to embark on a thorough review of the best fitness DVDs available.
I was pleasantly surprised by what was on offer, but also slightly confused as to which one would best suit my needs.
So, join us as we guide you through the choices of the most popular workouts and help you decide which is the best workout DVD currently available.
Working out at home should be fun and of course effective. Different programs will suit different people according to what you enjoy doing and what your timetable is like. Using a fitness DVD is a great way to add to any home workouts you may already be doing.
It is always a great idea to mix up your fitness routine so that you don’t get bored. Variety is key in sticking with a workout routine. Of course one great benefit of working out at home is the financial savings you can make. Gym membership can sometimes be costly, and let’s face it, we don’t always use our membership to the full!
Another brilliant positive to getting in shape at home is the time saved. You can pop on a DVD at any time that you have to spare and get moving. Here are some other great tips if you are new to working out at home.

We will give you the full lowdown on each one.
Some will be first hand accounts, as we put our own bodies through their paces. We’ll reveal all the highs and lows, inches lost and if I’m feeling brave enough I might even post the odd before and after pic (already feeling slightly eek about that one!)

Davina – Fit in 15
Davina McCall is a great inspiration and role model for many women and mums across the country. Not only does Davina have 3 children and juggle a successful career, she is also in great shape. Davina McCall has a history of great fitness dvds and her latest, Fit in 15, has been met with the same praise.
The DVD consists of 4 main workouts:
Cardio 15 30 second bursts of high intensity training alternated with 15 seconds rest periods, sustained for 15 minutes, make this the ultimate fatburner.
Arms 15 High intensity exercises with weights, alternated with intervals to keep the heart rate high and burn fat – all while you define those delts and banish those bingo wings!
Legs 15 A squat-tastic fifteen minutes of high energy leg exercises, alternated with intervals to make sure you’re fat burning while you’re toning the legs and bum.
Core 15 The focus is firmly on the core here – fifteen minutes of intense abdominals work, both standing and floor based, with weights. Great for toning, and also perfect for helping to maintain a good shape after weight loss.

Cool Down Stretch As with every workout a cool down stretch is essential.

The 30 Day Shred consists of a 3 x 20 minute workouts created by the well known American Personal Trainer, Jillian Michaels. It is both achievable and effective. Jillian will guide you through the 3-2-1 Interval System that progresses by levels of intensity, combining cardio, strength and abs.
The results are effective with claims of losing up to 20lbs in 30 days. Don’t be fooled though, the workouts are not easy. There are no rest periods, but as the workout is under 30 minutes you’ll be done before you know it!
15 Minute Fast Fitness with Jenny Pacey and Wayne Gordon
This program trains the whole body with short but intense workouts. The DVD consists of 3 sessions:
1. Swiss Ball An exercise ball works the core and major muscle groups in the body for a really effective workout. They’ll be activating your core, sculpting your body, burning fat and firing your stabilizer muscle.
2. Core Control This workout is designed to flatten your abs, strengthen your back and improve your posture. This will give you that flat tummy or 6-pack you ve always been after!
3. Dynamic Dumbbells One of the best ways to transform your body fast is to do strength training. Create lean, toned muscles and burn calories at the same time, keeping your body fat levels low.
X-TrainFit At Home Workout – 8 DVDs

How to decide which is the best fitness DVD for you
With so many home workouts to choose from the choice may seem over whelming at first. So how do you decide which one will suit you best? You need to look at your lifestyle and consider how much time you can really invest in your fitness regime.
For example, if you work a 12 hour day, the last thing you will want to do when you get home is an hour long workout. Be realistic with what you can do and you’ll stand a much higher chance of succeeding.
Unless you are following one of the longer programmes, like Insanity, Brazil Butt Lift or X-TrainFit, it probably makes sense to get at least 2 workout DVDs to keep things fresh. Alternate them each week/month to make sure you don’t get bored.
Do Fitness DVDs help you lose weight?
In short yes they do. However, you need to make sure you are doing it correctly and regularly. You also need to be eating the right foods. It’s no use working out every day and then living on take aways and fizzy pop. What you eat doesn’t need to be complicated, in fact, if you keep it simple you are much more likely to stick with it. Go for unprocessed foods and keep it as natural as possible. Don’t forget it is fine to stray off the healthy eating path and have something you crave. The key is to keep it in moderation so you don’t undo all the hard work you’ve already done.
It’s hard to say how many calories a fitness dvd burns. It all very much depends on the workout and you. For maximum calorie burn you should opt for the high intensity interval training workouts such as Insanity.
